TYPE MOON MASTER POST

I’ve seen quite a number of people getting into Nasu’s works/asking about the Fate franchise, and I’ve had this in mind for a while, so here it is! I don’t know if this is the first master post for this circle, but I hope it will help out some people who have been curious about the series!

WARNING: many of these works are 18+, and contain pornography and descriptions of gore. Unless you are 18+ or feel you are mature enough to view these works, please do not read further. Some games have the option of h-free patches, but still retain mature elements.

To mount .iso files, I recommend Daemon Tools Lite.

KARA NO KYOUKAI: THE GARDEN OF SINNERS (空の境界) (1998)

“even if this body is fake, this heart is real.”

Kinoku Nasu’s first set of novels, originally published in 1998 but then reprinted in 2004, and then brought back as films in 2007-08. The story follows a teenage girl, Shiki Ryougi, who can see the lines of ‘death’ of a person or object. The story describes her various encounters with mysterious magi and creatures that threaten the city’s existence, all while struggling with her identity and feelings for her best friend. It was split into 7 films plus an epilogue by the anime studio ufotable, with music by Yuki Kaijura. It is a basic introduction to the Nasuverse’s frequently used terms and can be described as an ‘alternate reality’ to Tsukihime, using many characters as prototypes, and even introducing characters that participated in later works.

TSUKIHIME (月姫) (2000)

“welcome home, nii-san.”

Type Moon’s first visual novel and released when it was just a doujin circle. Tsukihime follows the story of a young man, Shiki Tohno, who is returning to his home after 8 years of absence after a serious accident and loses his memories. Just like KnK’s Shiki, he has the ability to see the lines of ‘death’ ever since the accident, but can temporarily unsee them with bewitched glasses. While adjusting to his old home, he hears rumors of mysterious killings around his hometown, and eventually becomes heavily involved in preventing them. Tsukihime is considered ‘babby’s first VN’ by many in the visual novel community, and is an excellent short play for beginners and TM fans. The series also had a short 12 episode run as an anime by J.C. Staff, but is widely regarded as one of the worst novel to anime adaptions.

KAGETSU TOHYA (歌月十夜) (2001)

repeat again…

One year after the events of Tsukihime, Shiki Tohno is a victim of an accident. After this accident, Shiki awakens into a strange dream wherein he repeats the same day over and over. There are infinitely many endings to the day, but it always begins anew after each day. Eventually, Shiki discovers that he must find Len, the creator of the dream, if he wishes to escape. This sequel is regarded as a ‘fun disk’ and includes extra stories and bonuses not included in the first game, and definitely an entertaining and somewhat poignant play. It is recommended the first game, Tsukihime, is played first to understand various jokes.

MELTY BLOOD (メルティブラッド) (2002)

The story of Melty Blood follows one year after Tsukihime. Tohno Shiki hears of a new series of murders in Misaki similar to the one’s that took place Tsukihime. Whilst searching for the murderer he meets Sion Eltnam Atlasia who initiates a fight with him, attempting to capture him. After the fight she reveals that her reason for trying to capture him is to get in contact with the “True Ancestor” (referring to Arcueid) so that she may acquire information on the “cure for vampirism”. Shiki then decides to help her with this task. Many extensions of this game have been released, and it has been ported to the PS2.

All current releases of MB, including the extensions, can be found here. Actress Again requires a PS2 emulator, while all others can be played on a PC.

FATE/STAY NIGHT (フェイト/ステイナイト) (2004)

“I have a secret I haven’t told you… I’m a Magi”

Perhaps one of the biggest and fan-favourited Visual Novels, Fate/stay night introduces Shirou Emiya, who was orphaned 10 years ago and taken in by his now deceased foster father. He has taken on his father’s dream to be a “hero of justice”, and puts everyone in front of his own needs to become a “superhero” and fulfill his father’s long deceased wish. Unbeknownst to him, he is one of the seven Masters participating in the Holy Grail War – seven magi fighting with summoned Heroic Spirits to acquire the Holy Grail and grant any wish they desire. However, one night…
“Upon your summoning, I have come forth. Reply – are you my Master?”
He summons a beautiful girl named Saber, and so begins the Fifth Holy Grail War…

The game was originally released in 2004, with a 2006 anime adaption by Studio DEEN that was mostly “Fate” route centric (although incorporated UBW/Heaven’s Feel elements).  and a movie based on the route “Unlimited Blade Works” in 2010. In 2007, an all-ages PS2 port subtitled “Réalta Nua” was released and included the anime’s voice actors.

FATE/HOLLOW ATARAXIA (フェイト/ホロウアタラクシア) (2005)

Bazett Fraga McRemitz, a member of the Mages’ Association and a master in the 5th Holy Grail War, wakes on the fourth day of the 5th Holy Grail war with a new servant, Avenger, and no memory of what happened to her beforehand. She and Avenger set off to fight and win the Holy Grail War.

Meanwhile, Shirou Emiya lives a peaceful life with all his friends, from the 5th Holy Grail War. After her experiment alters the event-horizon changes time and space, Rin Tohsaka leaves for the Mages’ Association in England to fix things. The Servants sense a new danger while dark creatures appear soon afterward. Shirou, as a precaution, sets off to ensure nobody is in danger and instead finds himself frequently meeting a mysterious girl, Caren Ortensia.

Just as Kagetsu Tohya was Tsukihime’s ‘fun-disc’, F/HA is Fate’s.

FATE/ZERO (フェイト/ゼロ) (2006)

Justice cannot save the world. It is useless.

A four part prequel of the Fate/stay night visual novel, written by Nitroplus+’s Gen Urobuchi. Taking place 10 years before the game’s events, seven Masters participate in the Fourth Holy Grail War. Kiritsugu Emiya summons the Saber class and is entrusted to win the Grail for the Einzburn family, while Tokiomi Tohsaka and his assistant, Kirei Kotomine, join forces to win the Holy Grail. This series gives backstory for many key events that happens in the original game and has very little continuity issues. Similar to Urobuchi’s previous works, the series takes on a darker and more mature tone than the upbeat visual novel. In 2011, a 13 episode anime of Fate/Zero is produced by ufotable, who was previously in charge of creating the Kara no Kyoukai movies and is scheduled to resume back in April with the remaining 13 episodes. Although not required, reading Fate/zero before Fate/stay night would be recommended for maximum enjoyment.
